Timberland’s heritage of craftsmanship began in 1952 with Russian emigrant Nathan Swartz. He worked various jobs in the footwear industry until 1952 when he bought a half interest in the Abington Shoe Company located in South Boston, the company that eventually became known as Timberland.
In 1973 Timberland created its first guaranteed waterproof boot called the Timberland. The boot set the standards for performance, craftsmanship and quality that are still followed today. The boot was so successful that in 1978 the Swartz family changed the name of their company to the Timberland Company.
With the Timberland launch in Italy in 1980 the company marked its start of the international brand expansion. It continues to focus on performance and got honored by the Fast Company magazine’s annual Most Innovative Companies issue as one of the world’s top businesses. Timberland has been ranked in the Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in 24 sectors, including 4th in the Fashion category and 6th in the Consumer Products category.
